UMich Sample Undergrad Essay
Personally, social service represents not just an opportunity of helping individuals but signifies an enriching way of empowering them and actually being able to make a difference. Understanding the essence of social service has been responsible for molding me into the person that I am. Interacting with those less fortunate has taught me many valuable lessons about the power of hope and optimism. Though social service requires immense dedication, selflessness and patience, the fact that my actions could alter someone’s life positively is the reason I would continue with social service as my only activity.

Vivid memories of this fateful day are permanently etched in my heart. My team had come a long way into the semi-finals of the district level football championship. “Common guys, you’re almost there; you can do it. Just go out there and give it your best shot! Remember; never give up and never stop believing in yourself”. These were the inspiring words of my then coach, Mr. Maurya, right before the kick off the whistle. India is a melting pot of diverse cultures where countless religions have peacefully coexisted over centuries. Living amidst a rich synthesis of values, beliefs, communities, and religions, I reflexively learned to respect the beliefs and traditions of other people just as others have respected mine. On the virtue of being part of a social set up widely acclaimed for its unreserved acceptance and amalgamation of different cultures, these virtues and values are central to my identity and will go a long way in replicating a similar culture at the University of Washington.  (more…)
